Windows alone can account for about 50% of the heat inside of a building.

While walls have an insulation value of 11-13, and attics are usually rated 19-38, windows have only a 1 or 2 rating. When sunlight passes through a window, this light is converted to heat, which is then trapped inside the building. Think about your car sitting in the summer sun. Its indoor temperatures will rise dramatically over time because of this process, more commonly known as the greenhouse effect.

Replacing or updating your windows themselves will be expensive, and even with the most modern window technology, it is not a cost-effective option.
